Never Let Go
By Nicola Haken
#4 (and final) in the Take My Hand series
Review by Christina
5 stars

Have you ever picked up the last book in a series with trepidation because you just weren’t ready for it to end? That’s this book for me; it is a series I have come to love and I’m not ready to say goodbye.

Never Let Go picks up where both books two and three leave off (books two and three take place simultaneously, for the most part). Spoilers (If you have not read this series yet, STOP HERE! Immediately go and one-click book one, Take My Hand and catch up, trust me, it’s worth it!) At the end of book two, Hold On Tight, a bombshell is dropped that Chris has a brain tumour. Needless to say, this news sets the tone for the mood of the final book. But while chronicling the last days of a person you love can be gut wrenching and destroy you emotionally, Ms. Haken has managed to craft moments where the love between these characters is so readily apparent, you can’t help but smile, and understand that while his time on this planet may have been short, Chris was important to a lot of people in many different ways.

In this volume we really get back to what made the first book, Take My Hand, so good, the relationships. Emily and Dexter have managed to move on from the drama that had taken place in the States and their relationship is stronger than ever. Dexter has matured greatly, understanding that he will always be an addict, and is quickly able to recognize the triggers that made him use and work through them, rather than turning back to the drugs. Emily has matured greatly as well, especially when learning a huge family secret, which makes the relationship with her parents make a whole lot more sense.

We also watch Jared & Rachel’s relationship strengthen as they get closer and closer to becoming parents. They each have major physical obstacles to overcome, but they must learn to cope and conquer, knowing they will soon have two little lives depending on them. Even Aunt Sarah’s life is about to change in a major way, one which no one saw coming!

Never Let Go is a very proper send off for a group of individuals who ended up becoming more of a family than anyone could dream of. There were plot twists that I didn’t see coming that made Chris’s sendoff easier to digest, although you will still want to have the tissues handy. I have loved Ms. Haken’s use of humour throughout the series and there is no shortage of it in this book, despite the emotional heaviness of it. Snickers (Rachel) is back with a vengeance and her banter with just about everyone lightens the mood significantly, and the relationship that has developed between Chris and Dexter goes beyond friendship, right into brotherhood. This series has played upon nearly every emotion that we can experience and yet at the end we’re given such a sense of catharsis that these people, through all of the trials and tribulations over the last year of their lives, will finally get the HEA they so deserve.
While I’ll miss Emily, Dexter, Chris, Rachel, and Jared, I am thankful they were given the type of sendoff they deserve. The epilogue wraps up everything nicely and we’re given a sense that everyone is going to be just fine. Five shining stars to cap off an amazing series. Thank you Ms. Haken, I’m definitely looking forward to the next ride you take us on!

Teaser 2 - My Mistake

  Excerpt-

When he came back around to the front of the barn, she was sitting on top of a bale of hay, holding up a brown paper back with a grease stain on the bottom. Mooch, traitor that he was, perched at her feet, looking up at her adoringly, waiting for her to drop the bag.

“Mama sent some chicken and biscuits.”

He grunted an acknowledgment, and pulled his hat lower over his eyes so he didn't have to see the pain in hers.

She stood, setting the bag down next to her, and sauntered over to the stall where he was spreading fresh straw.

“What’s wrong?”

He couldn't think of the words to say to her. Everything that came to mind was wrong, and Brent knew that there was no way to have this conversation without hurting her. But he had to, or else he would end up hurting her worse in the long run.

As he kicked straw around the floor of the stall, he knew he was being stupid. For the last two weeks, all he’d talked about was how badly he wanted her to stay with him. And now he was about to do this…

He finally stopped when she said, “Brent. You’re scaring me. Is this about me not being able to have kids?”

“No.” Brent brushed past her to go to the feed room. Rattling the bucket brought in the mare, an enormous equine with a shaggy coat and bones showing through loose skin. She followed him into the stall, as he emptied the bucket into her feed trough, and then started pulling the injections from his pockets and preparing them silently.

When he had the first one ready, he finally got the guts to raise his head and look at Casey and deliver the brilliant line he’d spent the past ten minutes coming up with. “I need to think about some stuff.”

Her mouth dropped, and Brent lowered his head to the mare’s shoulder. While she was distracted, eating, he pinched some skin between his gloved fingers and stuck in the needle, pushing the plunger.

Brent had no idea what happened next. All he was aware of was a swift intake of breath, before he saw a wall of brown crush into him, then a jumble of whinnies, a frantic woof, a shrill scream, some clatters, then hoofs aimed at his chest, before blackness took over.

My Review
My Mistake
By Anne Conley
Review by Christina
Casey is picking up the pieces after her recent divorce. She’s living back at home with her mom, finishing up with a job she’s not sure she wants to do anymore. She’s back in her hometown, looking to make changes, when a blast from the past comes through and knocks her off her feet. Little did she know ogling the hot guy installing a roof down the road would change her life so dramatically.

Brent works odd jobs to help support the one thing he truly loves, his fledgling horse sanctuary. He’s just starting out so he needs to supplement his income however he can and that includes things like roofing. When he finds himself in his friend Casey’s neighborhood, he wonders if she is back in town. He ends up on her doorstep and the rest, as they say, is history.

Brent & Casey could have once been classified as a sure thing. Casey is best friends with Brent’s younger sister Summer. They grew up together, but when Casey graduated from high school, Brent was questioning his place in her life, thinking Casey deserved better than him. So when Casey went on to get married, he kept his silence, even though there was still that pull between them.

Brent & Casey quickly pick up where they left off years ago, igniting a very hot relationship between the two. But Brent knows Casey’s history, namely an alcoholic father, and he’s afraid that some of the demons of his own past are going to come back to haunt them, and Casey is no longer going to be interested.

When odd things start turning up missing around her house and there is evidence that someone has broken in, Casey’s world is quickly turned upside down and she is no longer sure of who she can trust. While her divorce was somewhat less than amicable, her ex-husband has pursued a new life with his mistress and their baby, something that he was always quick to point out that Casey could not give him. And so much time has passed with Brent, could she trust him? Especially given the other secrets he’s keeping from her?

My Mistake was a fast, engaging, scorching hot read. The passion and fire felt between Brent & Casey was palpable, and you could really get a sense of their shared history together. I loved Brent as a character. He wasn’t your typical alpha male. He is sweet and passionate, kind of the all-American guy next door. Casey is fun and flirty with a penchant for matching her underclothes to her shoes. There were little quirks like that that made the characters endearing.

My only complaint is that I wish there was more. While the storyline and characters were certainly well developed, I can’t help but feel that there is more to the story that can be told. More glimpses into their past, as well as a better look into Casey’s failed marriage, because it had such a huge impact on the outcome of the story. This was the first book I’ve written by Ms. Conley and it certainly won’t be the last! My Mistake was a solid four star read.

*****THIS BOOK CAN BE READ AS A STANDALONE*****

Being the daughter of a big-city mayor, twenty-one year old Skye Summers has giant shoes to fill in her first real job out of college. Playboy entrepreneur Landon Steele has built a successful entertainment PR firm and broken more than a few hearts along the way. He’s counting on his enthusiastic new assistant to help him expand his business into LA… until he discovers she’s a pampered rich girl who’s in the public spotlight as much as his famous clients. Still, he agrees to give her a chance, and soon the two are heating up the bedroom as well as the boardroom.

But when Skye’s ex-boyfriend threatens to reveal a dangerous secret from her past, her job, relationship with Landon, and her father’s career are suddenly all on the line. Will she be forced to leave Landon? Or will she pursue her heart, regardless of the cost?

Limelight Series #2
Review by Christina
5 Stars

She’s gone and done it again.

Yet another delightfully funny, steamy, heartwarming read with fun, likeable characters set to a real life storyline.

Skye has landed her first real job and has her own apartment, finally striking it out on her own after having lived the life of the devoted politician’s daughter. Some might think that being born with a silver spoon in her mouth would make the transition to the adult world all the easier, being able to use her dad’s contacts or simply marrying for money, but Skye is determined to make her life for herself. When she is hired as the assistant to Landon Steele, CEO of Steele & Associates, an up and coming PR firm, she is ready to put her skills to work and make an impression on her new boss. Unfortunately she has already made quite an impression on him, when unbeknownst to either of them, they became acquainted in a near hookup at a club. Despite their attraction to one another, Skye becomes even more certain that she has to prove her worth to her new boss.

Landon Steele is moving up in the PR world and looking to branch out, possibly even adding an office in Los Angeles to start taking on celebrity clients. When he meets his new assistant and immediately recognizes her as the girl that got away after a sizzling make out session, he becomes conflicted over his feelings for her. He soon learns that she is not just a spoiled little rich girl looking to play in the grown up world, however he also can’t help fighting the attraction that keeps bringing the two of them together. Between trying to keep up appearances in the office and Skye’s father running for a senate seat, the two must decide how deep they want this relationship to get, however as with most relationships, it might be outside influences that decide it all for them. Ghosts from each of their pasts have other ideas.

While Picture Perfect is the second book in the Limelight series, it can be read as a standalone. The first book, Rumor Has It, follows the relationship between Skye’s best friend Ellie and her boyfriend Mason. Much like Rumor Has It, Ms. Grace crafts characters that you just can’t help but love. Landon is not only sexy, but he’s sensitive as well. Skye is a strong heroine that craves independence, while still wanting nothing but the world for those she loves. She understands sacrifice, even if it is her own happiness.

Picture Perfect is another five star read for me. Yes, it is a little typical of a NA romance, however I really love the characters and the storyline has snippets of real-life, with real-life consequences. I liked the appearances of Katie, Ellie, and Mason from Rumor Has It, even wishing there was more interaction between the two couples. I’m sure Mason and Landon could come to a mutually beneficial business arrangement (hint, hint). Once I picked this up, I didn’t want to put it down, as I was engrossed from the very beginning. If you’re looking for a fun, fast, sizzling romp, look no further!

Landon’s POV

It was an unseasonably warm day for December in L.A. so the pool deck was busy. I was relaxing on the chaise inside the cabana after giving my drink order to the waiter when I saw Skye making her way across the pool deck. She had on a pair of sunglasses and a floral cover-up with long, billowing sleeves. When she reached the cabana, she smiled wide and dropped her beach bag onto the coffee table in the center.
The waiter just left. I didn't order for you because I wasn't sure what you'd want,” I said.
I think I'm going to take a dip in the pool. Do you mind ordering me an iced tea when the waiter comes back?”
Sure thing.”
She slid off her sandals and then proceeded to pull her cover-up off over her head.
I was in trouble.
I was in so much fucking trouble if I thought there was any way I might get through this trip sleeping only a few rooms away from her when she looked like that.
Her swimsuit was a gold one-piece that had a slit all the way down to her belly button and a belt around the waist. I'd been imagining what she'd look like completely naked since I’d first seen her. This swimsuit was giving me a pretty good idea, but apparently my imagination hadn’t been doing her justice.
She smiled at me before heading over to the pool and diving in. It was clear she had no idea the effect seeing her in that tiny bit of fabric had on me. That or she hid it well. Now I'd be trying to hide the wood I'd no doubt be sporting all afternoon.
The waiter returned and I ordered Skye's drink. A few minutes later, he dropped it off just as Skye was returning to the cabana. He did a double-take as she came up behind him. I couldn't blame him but it still fueled my competitive nature, seeing another man appreciate her rocking body. Even if she wasn’t mine.
I tipped him a couple of dollars and said, “We're good for a while. Thanks.” Skye smiled her megawatt, draw-every-man-to-her-within-twenty-feet smile as he passed by her to leave. Fuck me, but I loved that smile. “How was the water?” I asked.
She grabbed a towel off one of the tables and began to dry herself off. “Warmer than I thought it'd be. We got lucky it's such a nice day out today.”
The warmers help, too,” I said, motioning to the heater in the roof of the cabana.
There is that.” She laughed, her entire face lighting up.
She really was breathtaking...and pure...full of light. When I was with her, I forgot about the pressures of growing my business and my strained relationship with my father—everything else just faded into the background and I was just here with her…in the present. And none of the other shit mattered.
When she was done rubbing that damn towel over every inch of her porcelain skin, she came to sit beside me on the couch and grabbed her drink off the table. I watched as she took the straw between her lips. This had to be some form of foreplay torture. First the swimsuit, then rubbing herself down, and now this? As she sucked the liquid down, I began to get hard just thinking about what those lips would look like wrapped around the end of my cock.
I couldn’t watch her a second longer. I pulled the drink away from her mouth and she gave me a quizzical look. “We need to talk.”

I have a soft spot for romance novels with happily ever afters and a HOT spot for alpha males! I currently live outside Toronto, Canada with my hubby, two small children and cat spawned by the devil. Life is busy, but never to busy for a good story and to share my love of reading and writing with others. Things I can tell you that sum me up...I'm a sugar and carb addict, self-professed Gandy Girl, a disaster in the kitchen, a LOVER of all music, I enjoy reality TV and I'm an early riser! When I have a moment to breath you can usually find me typing furiously on the keyboard to get my next story on paper, or curled up reading about someone else's HEA.

Excerpt

I was so excited for Olivia and Kyle. I couldn’t wait to hear how her first weekend filled with sex was. It took time, but I knew it was worth the wait for both of them. She probably wouldn’t be as available since she finally let go with Kyle. Couldn’t say I blamed her, though. I wanted to be with John every chance I got. Just thinking about what he could do had me squeezing my legs together.
Pulling into Olivia’s apartment complex, I tried to get my thoughts back on her and Kyle. There was no way I could talk about John and me. This needed to be Olivia’s day and the attention needed to be on them. I just hoped Kyle didn’t insist on staying. It was really sweet of John to offer to come over and take Kyle out for a beer while Olivia and I talked. We just had to get Kyle to go.
Just as I started to enter Olivia’s building, emergency vehicles entered the parking lot. An ambulance, a fire truck, and several police vehicles—with full lights and sirens—screeched to a stop just feet from the door. I looked to my left as the building manager opened the door and shooed me out of the way. “I haven’t been up there yet, but I just saw her boyfriend. I tried to stop him, but he shoved me out of his way.” He stopped, and I could see on his face that it registered with him who I was. “You don’t want to go up there.”
“That’s fine, sir. We’ll handle it now.” Police and EMTs ran through the door and started up the stairs. One officer stayed down to talk to the manager, and I slipped through the door when he pointed out Olivia and Kyle’s cars.
My heart was beating fast. It had to be a mistake. There was no way they were talking about Olivia’s apartment. I reached Olivia’s floor and had just seen the last officer enter her apartment. I ran faster as I heard Kyle’s tortured voice at the end of the hall.
“Live, please, please live. I need you to live for me, for us. We can work through this. You just need to live, and I’ll do the rest.” Kyle was on the floor with her across his lap. He started sobbing as the medics tried to pry Olivia out of his arms.
I gripped the doorway. “No! No! No!” The medics pumped oxygen into Olivia’s lungs with a bag over her mouth, as they were yelling vitals to each other. They ran out of the room, leaving Kyle and me alone with the blood on the floor and police looking around. Trying to get Kyle off the floor, I yelled at him, “Come on, Kyle. We need to go. She needs us.”
He just cried and painfully clutched my legs. “She’s gone. How can she leave me? She can’t leave me!”
I tried again to get him up. “You need to go tell her that! We both need to tell her. Let’s go, now!”
Kyle struggled to get up, but he did. We ran into John coming down the hall. “What happened?”
Seeing John broke down what little strength I had and the room started spinning. I only hoped I no longer had to be the strong one. I started sobbing. “I don’t know. Her face was so swollen and there’s so much blood.” I pointed to Olivia’s apartment. He looked in at the scene and gasped as he took a step back.
“We have questions we need answered.” One of the officers came out of Olivia’s apartment.
“They’re going to have to wait until later,” John said, turning back to Kyle and me to escort us out. “We need to be at the hospital. You can ask us there or wait until we’re ready to come in, but now we are going to the hospital,” he yelled over his shoulder.
“One of us will need to follow you there.”
John never turned around as we headed toward the stairs. “Do what you must, but we’re leaving.”

B.L. Mooney started writing when the voices and storylines in her head ran out of room. They were getting too cramped and neither B.L. nor the characters could take it anymore, so she did the only thing she could do--she made room. She always knew she wanted to write, but vowed to make time for it later. Now that she's made time for writing, most everything else falls to the wayside. That seems to suit the characters that keep popping up just fine.
B.L. lives in the Midwest and her other talents include in-demand cookies, a very dry sense of humor, and stealth eavesdropping. Some mannerisms, attitudes, or twists come from random sentences picked up while passing by strangers. So speak up the next time you have something to gossip about. You never know, it may just end up on the pages of the next book you read.
